Google Maps to GPX
Convert your Google Maps saved places, lists, and starred locations to GPX format for GPS devices and outdoor apps like Garmin, AllTrails, and Gaia GPS.
Google Maps has no GPX export, so converting Google Maps to GPX takes a workaround. If you want to use your starred locations, custom lists, or labeled places on a Garmin GPS, hiking app, or any device that requires GPX files, this page covers it. Two cases are covered: your saved places and lists (below), and custom maps you built yourself, which have their own Google My Maps to GPX guide. For a saved-places walkthrough with troubleshooting, see the saved places to GPX guide. To export to other formats such as CSV or KML, see how to export a Google Maps list.
How to Export Google Maps to GPX (3 Steps)
- Export from Google Takeout — Visit takeout.google.com and select “Maps (your places)” or “Saved”. This downloads your Google Maps data in a ZIP archive: one CSV per saved list, plus Saved Places.json for starred places. Deselect all other Google products to speed up the export.
- Upload to Takeout Tools — Upload the entire ZIP (or the CSV files inside it) to Takeout Tools. The app automatically detects your saved places and lists.
- Download GPX Files — Select which lists you want to convert, choose GPX as the output format, and download. You'll get one GPX file per list, ready to use on any GPS device or app. You can preview your places on a map before downloading to verify everything exported correctly.

Why Use GPX for Google Maps Data?
- GPS Devices — Import your saved places directly into Garmin, Magellan, and other GPS units
- Outdoor Apps — Use your Google Maps lists in AllTrails, Gaia GPS, Komoot, and other hiking/navigation apps
- Offline Navigation — Have your saved locations available when you don't have cell service
- Universal Format — GPX works everywhere — it's the standard for GPS data exchange
Alternative: Free KML to GPX Converter
If you only need to convert a single KML file (like one list from Google Maps), you can use our free browser-based KML to GPX converter. It runs entirely in your browser — no upload required. Perfect for quick, one-off conversions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I export directly from Google Maps to GPX?
No, Google Maps doesn't have a native GPX export feature. You need to use Google Takeout to download your saved places (one CSV file per list), then convert them to GPX using Takeout Tools.
What Google Maps data can I export to GPX?
You can export all your saved places (starred locations), custom lists, labeled places, and any locations you've saved to your Google Maps account. These export as individual lists that you can convert to GPX.
Will this work with Garmin GPS devices?
Yes! GPX is the standard format for Garmin devices. Once converted, you can transfer the GPX files to your Garmin using Garmin Express or BaseCamp software.
Is my data uploaded to any server?
Your list is processed on our servers to add addresses and coordinates. We don't sell your data. Google Takeout is Google's own service for downloading your data.
Can I use the GPX files in AllTrails or other hiking apps?
Absolutely! The converted GPX files work with any app that supports GPX imports, including AllTrails, Gaia GPS, Komoot, Strava, and most outdoor navigation apps.
